Anthony Michael Hall reflects on his career, highlighting John Hughes' unique integration of music into scripts and the collaborative, ad-lib-friendly filming process. He discusses his brief, high-profile interaction with Stanley Kubrick, the evolution of Comic-Con from niche gatherings to massive family-friendly events, and the importance of generosity in building lasting professional relationships. The conversation also touches on Paul Newman's passion for racing over acting and the value of gratitude in maintaining happiness.
“John was amazing that way. Like he would integrate all those songs into a soundtrack... He had a desktop computer in the corner and then floor to ceiling 12-inch records. Almost looked like a record store really. So that was really integral to his process, how he wrote all those music cues into the scripts.”
“The key is to be non-threatening because women want to know who you are... If they know you, like they know you from TV, right? It's like you went to high school with him and and you're in. It's a kind of a threat assessment almost.”
“Stanley Kubrick... told me that [16 Candles] was his favorite actor he had seen since he saw Nicholson and Easy Rider. I was blown away as a kid... ultimately, he didn't want to pay me any money really.”
“The only thing that I ever found any grace in was in an automobile... He wanted to be looked at as a driver, not as an Academy Award winner... He wasn't so much divided between the two. It was that film would come second to race.”
“You can't have gratitude and be happy. Like you can't simultaneously hate this country and be happy. You have to hate this country and be miserable.”
